DPR Teams with Studios Architecture on AIA Headquarters Project

DPR recently garnered the American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Headquarters renovation project, a few blocks from the White House in Washington, D.C.

DPR’s Falls Church, VA office will work closely with the AIA and Studios Architecture on the project, which will provide a 21st Century example of a sustainable workplace. The team will use a fully integrated project delivery (IPD) process enhanced by building information modeling (BIM) to reduce waste, maximize efficiency and ensure quality throughout all phases of design and construction on the green project.

The project team is researching the use of rainwater capturing systems, photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, geothermal systems, natural ventilation, passive heating and cooling systems, and daylighting, among other strategies to satisfy electrical demand. The renovated building will be a stepping stone for the AIA, whose ultimate goal is to be carbon neutral by the year 2030.
Construction on the AIA project is tentatively scheduled to start late spring/early summer of 2009, with completion expected in 2011.

Clemson Goes for the Gold with Green Lab

Clemson University, whose school color is vivid orange, is going for the gold on its new $42 million Bio-Science/Life Sciences Building, being built by DPR’s Atlanta office with architect Perkins+Will. Targeting Gold LEED® certification, the 100,000-sq.-ft. building’s “Green 2.0” features include active chilled beam technology, rainwater harvesting, condensate water reuse, heat recovery systems, low-flow plumbing fixtures, exterior sunshades and daylight harvesting. The green building signals the start of a new, environmentally friendly quadrangle for the Clemson campus.

DPR Develops Intern Photo Contest

Wanting to add to its stock of “under-construction” photos, DPR this summer held its 1st annual Great Shot! intern photo contest.

In August, the digital photos started streaming into the Great Shot! contest inbox. By the contest deadline, one third of DPR’s interns had submitted 222 photos. The 25 finalists were presented to DPR employees, who cast their top three votes. “This was hard; they’re all incredible!” said one employee.
The winners? 1st place: Jason Neubauer; 2nd place: Timothy Racine; 3rd place (tie): Scott Mosier and John Shroyer. All winners are from DPR’s Newport Beach office. For this issue, DPR would like to thank Timothy Kaza for his photos of the Fuller Theological Seminary library, and Katie Olsen for her photo of DPR employees. Both are from the Newport Beach office.
