Managing Energy Costs at Hoag Memorial Hospital

To maximize energy output, Hoag Memorial Hospital, an acute-care, not-for-profit medical center serving Southern California and its surrounding area for nearly 50 years, recently awarded DPR a project to build a new central plant on the lower campus of its facility in Newport Beach, CA. Designed by Taylor & Associates Architects, the new plant will operate as the primary power source for the campus, capturing waste heat, and converting it to chilled and hot water for the hospital’s air conditioning and heating systems. Specifically, DPR will add electric generation equipment, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and related equipment to augment the existing chilled water and hot water capacity of the Upper Campus Central Plant. The generators will supply up to 4.5 megawatts of power (enough to power 4,000 homes). Additional chillers and equipment will also be adequately sized to meet the chilled water demand for the future build-out of the Upper Campus and have expansion space to facilitate additional chillers and equipment for the buildout of the Lower Campus.

APL Logistics Expands into Douglas Hill Business Park

DPR’s Atlanta office began moving dirt at Douglas Hill Business Park to prepare a new 1.2 million-sq.-ft. development, including a tilt-up distribution warehouse and office buildings, in Lithia Springs, GA. Owned by Catellus Development, the three new buildings—designed by Alliance Architects and scheduled for completion in early 2004—will house APL Logistics, a global provider of supply-chain management services. Building great things over the last two years for such customers as PricewaterhouseCoopers, AOL/Time Warner, Norcross Cooperative Ministries, and Trammell Crow, DPR’s Atlanta office is working closely with Catellus to “build a new world-class facility for APL Logistics Southeast operations and further strengthen our presence in the Mid-Atlantic region,” said Steve Bartkowski of DPR in Atlanta.

Summer Internship Program Gets High Marks

For this year’s Summer Internship Program, DPR recruited 24 interns from 15 colleges across the country. The program, designed to help students transition into the working world, offers an educational and enjoyable summer. Under the wings of a mentor and armed with computers and business cards, interns are typically placed at DPR jobsites, where they are involved in a variety of activities from preconstruction and processing submittals to working with owners and networking at jobsite walks and sporting events. “From day one, I felt like a valuable contributor of the project team. It didn’t matter that I was an intern, I was given real responsibilities,” said Raymond Castillo from Cal Poly. John Arcello from Michigan State is also a satisfied customer. “DPR’s internship program went above and beyond my expectations. I can assure my fellow classmates DPR is ‘the’ company to work for!”
