The Drive to Zero

Setting New Standards for Keeping People Safe

Our customers change the world in which we live. They invent new technology. They discover and manufacture new medicines and delivery methods. They help heal the sick and deliver new life. They create new paradigms.

We have had the good fortune to work with some of the best companies in the world, and like them, we also are committed to setting new standards in business, in the way we build projects, in the health and safety of our people. A lot of companies have great safety programs. At DPR, we have built a safety culture.

DPR has a great, detailed safety plan, and they really follow through.

I’ve never seen a company so “hot” on safety. It’s really refreshing.

DPR is one of the best…The level of communication has been a good surprise. With other contractors, the safety program was often implied but not expressed or explained in the way DPR has done.

These are just some of the many quotes on safety pulled from Customer Satisfaction Surveys this year. In fact, based on more than 600 surveys, our customers ranked DPR nearly 30 percent better than “Best in Class” (their best previous experience) in safety. Creating an injury-free environment, however, is much more than measuring results, applying new methodology and making procedural changes. It requires supportive leadership, open communication and personal commitment from all workers.

Over the last 15 years, we have focused our culture of safety on people, education and training of the entire project team, inspiring thousands of workers on our jobsites across the country to believe that safety, quality and schedule are not mutually exclusive and that zero accidents is truly an achievable goal. We have established a “checks and balances” system that demands daily management involvement and craft participation, as well as includes extensive pre-task planning, accountability audits, field reinforcement walks and the use of a web-based tool to target at-risk behaviors in real-time. We also take a pragmatic approach by examining the severity of events and looking at how we address these incidents for further improvement—helping everyone on the job to succeed in building an injury-free environment.

The foundation of our safety culture is the emotional ownership we all take in our work, and this commitment has not only led to the proven delivery of higher quality projects but also resulted in the best safety record in the history of the company. Our 1.3 company-wide recordable incident rate and zero loss-time rate, based on more than 2.5 million hours worked in 2005, make DPR the safest contractor in the country.

Thank you to all of our employees, subcontractors, owners and other team members for your ongoing diligence and helping us set a new standard in keeping people safe.
