Confidential Data Center Tenant Improvement
Confidential Data Center Tenant Improvement | Ashburn, Virginia
Since breaking ground on the DC10 site in May 2011, DPR has successfully delivered the shell building and all four phases of the data center. DPR led the conceptual design development for this final phase.
Project Scope
Phase 4 included the build-out of the remaining space, providing colocation with the ability to house 985 cabinets with an associated electrical room and a 720 count battery room. The 8,000-sq.-ft. electrical room has three electrical blocks that add 4,110KW of power to the building. The work also included the installation of two additional backup generators and repurposing of an existing generator, all of which provide 2.5MW of power, and the installation of 11 RTUs, consisting of eight 120T and three 40T units. The space includes a new RO system and additional pre-action cabinets.
The team was able to overcome any issues through daily meetings with subcontractors. These meetings helped identify conflicts early on and helped the team work proactively to mitigate any issues that surfaced rather than reactively after the work was completed. The colocation space could not be traditionally built due to the additional steel members belonging to the overhead structure, paint and strut system, underground conduits, RAF, cages and electrical equipment. The team identified this problem early on in the project and planned out a specific sequence to complete the work top-to-bottom to circumvent the steel members. Additionally, the electrical skids for the hookups arrived late, but the team built the battery room in a manner to allow the late-arriving skids to pass through the room with less disruption to the work taking place.
The team held jobsite safety meetings every Tuesday with the entire crew that focused on a project specific safety topic applicable to ongoing or upcoming work. The project logged more than 85,000 hours worked and had zero injuries.
