Construction Technology

The existing building was laser scanned to create a point cloud for 3D model coordination. Without doing this scan, we would have needed to rely on the design model from the base building—which would not have accounted for changes or errors in the field. This scan identified discrepancies between the as-built drawings and actual field conditions with multiple concrete columns. Using this information, the design team was able to modify their design before construction started, limiting rework in the field. The 3D model coordination developed during preconstruction made it possible for our team to use robotics during construction.

Dusty, a layout-assist robot developed by Dusty Robotics, uses information from the 3D coordinated model to layout wall and door locations. Having the walls and door locations with swing laid out prior to interior framing also allowed the owner the better visualize the flow of the finished space. Dusty also did layout locations of all mechanical and plumbing penetrations through walls, labeling each penetration with the size and height from the finished floor. This information is a challenge to complete accurately and early enough to support the framing crew framing the openings for these penetrations. This typically leads to rework later in the project. Dusty also laid out room names, ceiling types and finish information to help with quality control checks during construction. Dusty (and the operator) completed layout on a single floor in two days—this would have taken a three-person crew approximately one week to complete and would have been open to human error.

The Hilti Jaibot uses information from the model to layout and drill holes in the concrete structure for the hangers that support the mechanical ductwork and plumbing piping. We were able to drill 100 holes in an hour with Jaibot, comparatively a human installer can complete five or six holes per hour. The use of the Jaibot also improved jobsite safety. This work generates silica dust and typically requires someone to stand on a ladder holding a 20 lb rotary hammer above their head. The use of Jaibot reduced exposure to silica dust and eliminated the need for overhead work to complete this scope of work.
