Project

Description

The Memorial Cancer Institute consisted of a new 121,554-sq.-ft. standalone building. The 4-story concrete structure with precast, curtainwall, and a metal panel skin system features a garden roof on the fourth floor. This facility consisted of two linear accelerators, one cyberknife, one CT Sim, one HDR room, exam rooms, infusion bays, pharmacy, blood lab, and a 4-story atrium in the main lobby.

Programmed as an outpatient building associated to Memorial Healthcare System, the facility has radiotherapy, a hemoc clinic, breast center, and infusion therapy functions. The radiotherapy and hemoc clinic provides treatment to the occasional individual classified as an inpatient from the Memorial Health West Hospital. The building is a separated mixed-use of business and institutional I-2 occupancies. The radiotherapy and hemoc clinics occupy the I-2 classification.

The design of Memorial Cancer Institute was a collaborative effort of physicians, staff, patients, and families, and factored in natural elements of light, color, technology and convenience, creating a space for healing. Featuring a dedicated breast cancer center designed with input from cancer survivors, the private infusion suites are located with windows that provide natural light and overlook scenes of nature and green spaces.

We had several challenges with our glass system due to the volatility of the industry and raw material procurement. One of the key factors of being able to overcome this challenge was to work with our Self-Perform Drywall team to re-sequence the flow of the interior buildout to minimize the impact to the interior schedule. This allowed the project to start the interior buildout on time while the exterior skin was still ongoing.

Several revisions and added scope of work were released to us throughout this project. The team was able to successfully manage these changes through the communication efforts and relationships built with not only the client, but also the design teams. Creating the culture and environment to allow the owner and architect to work out of the jobsite office allowed for these changes and decisions to be well communicated and streamlined for execution.
