Nortel Networks Santa Clara Campus

Nortel Networks Santa Clara Campus | Santa Clara, California

In early 2000, Nortel Networks assembled the prime players for the team that would help them realize their goal of expanding and consolidating their Silicon Valley operations. In late March of 2000, DPR Construction was selected from among eight competitors to provide preconstruction and construction services for the project.

Nortel Networks established a lofty goal for the team—which consisted of Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, PM Global, and DPR—of designing, permitting, constructing and occupying more than 1.2 million sq. ft. of space within two years. DPR rose to the challenge and took the lead in creating the fast track schedule required to make this goal a reality. Working closely with the designers to establish minimum requirements, DPR brought the curtainwall, precast, concrete piles, and structural steel subcontractors on board prior to the issuance of permit documents in order to get these key long-lead items in production. To meet the needs of the schedule, DPR further collaborated with the designers to establish the roll-out of permit documents.

DPR began construction of Nortel's Santa Clara campus on September 18, 2000. The $142 million campus consists of two six-story office buildings totaling 617,000 sq. ft., two five-story parking garages totaling 638,000 sq. ft. and a 19,000-sq.-ft. combination cafeteria/auditorium building. The campus was completed and occupied by March 31, 2002. DPR worked almost 300,000 man-hours on the project by self-performing the foundations, rough carpentry, drywall, taping, doors, frames, and hardware scopes.
