Piedmont Athens Regional | Master Facility Plan | Athens, Georgia
The Piedmont Athens Regional – Master Facility Plan project was a four-year engagement for preconstruction and construction services with the main objectives of improving delivery of patient care and operational efficiency at Piedmont’s existing Athens Regional campus.
Project Scope
Boasting 230,000 sq. ft. of new construction and 150,000 sq. ft. of renovated space, the project included demolition of a four-story tower in a century-old portion of the hospital called Prince 1 and replacing it with a new six-story, 128-bed patient tower.
Half of an adjacent six-story tower, also part of Prince 1, was renovated, and a fourth floor was added to the three-story Prince 2 building next door.
Forty-seven beds in outdated, undersized rooms were demolished to make way for the new Prince 1 tower, which includes 32 acute and 32 intensive care beds, and another 25 converted from acute care to observation. The old 24-bed intensive care unit was converted to administrative offices. Thirty-two beds were added to the fourth floor of Prince 2.
In addition to the main objective of improving delivery of patient care and operational efficiency, the project also aimed to improve both vehicular and pedestrian circulation around campus and simplify patient arrival, wayfinding and access, and helps Piedmont to fulfill its purpose and promise of making a positive difference in every life they touch.
The enabling portion of the project occurred from November 2018 - January 2020. The 150,000 sq. ft. of renovations included 32 departmental moves, including hospitalists, cardiac testing, on-call, oncology, neuro-diagnostics, ambulatory treatment center, women's services, labor and delivery, OB ED, respiratory therapy and infection isolation.
