Rice University New Emerging Science & Technology Center

Rice University New Emerging Science & Technology Center | Houston, Texas

The New Emerging Science and Technology Center (NEST) is a uniquely flexible laboratory and administrative space that allows Rice University to support a variety of research types in spaces that can be reassigned for faculty changes and additions.

Avoiding

Disruptions

The NEST project started with a complete demolition of the existing laboratory space and an upgrade of all MEP systems. The existing chilled water system did not have shut down valves installed, so the DPR team replaced all of the piping through entire building shut downs coordinated with the facility and other researchers. The floor above the work area houses a laboratory with live controlled experiments. DPR was able to maintain the research environment without disruption by providing temporary cooling equipment during the shut down.

Technical

Know-How

Outdated glass acid waste lines were replaced with new state of the art glass piping to meet updated standards. New fume hood exhaust, general exhaust, plumbing, air handlers, DDC building controls and exhaust fans were also installed. Electrical panels were concealed by architectural “portals” with LCD monitors and glass writing surfaces for researchers to share information in the new collaborative space.
