Riverside Health System | Walter Reed Expansion & Renovation
Riverside Health System | Walter Reed Expansion & Renovation | Gloucester, Virginia
The Walter Reed Expansion & Renovation project for Riverside Health System included a two-story surgical center expansion as well as a renovation to the emergency department (ED), lobby, and main entrance.
Details
Construction of the expanded surgical center was phased and sequenced with the interior renovation projects and previously executed enabling work. The 54,000-sq.-ft. surgical center included three new operating rooms and one future OR shell space, two procedure rooms, pre-operative and post-operative care areas, as well as a pharmacy, 36 new patient rooms, a new hospital entrance, and lobby. The 39,000-sq.-ft. of interior renovations included an expansion of the existing emergency department, ED waiting room and lobby, tripling the current square footage of the emergency department.
An additional footprint came from the relocation of existing departments into areas within the new surgery center and enabling work areas. Also included in the renovation scope is the relocation and construction of new registration and administration suites. To support the additional square footage and new code compliance, the existing central utility plant was upgraded to include the installation of new facility primary service entrance gear, which required replacing the existing gear and re-feeding all existing electrical services to the new switchgear as well as installing an additional 1000kw generator. The existing hospital boiler system was also replaced while keeping the facility fully operational, and new air-cooled chillers and boilers were installed to support the new surgical center expansion.
