Shriners Hospitals for Children Medical Center Pasadena
Shriners Hospitals for Children Medical Center Pasadena | Pasadena, California
Shriners Hospitals for Children, a DPR repeat customer, completed a new outpatient care facility, including an ambulatory surgical center, to house its clinical, diagnostic, outpatient surgery, and rehabilitation programs in Pasadena, CA. The scope of work included the demolition of two one-story existing structures. The project consists of a new three-story facility and three levels of subterranean parking with 250 stalls.
Project Scope
DPR was initially involved in evaluating the existing OSHPD-1 Shriners facility and what it would take to bring the 70-year-old facility up to compliance with current OSHPD requirements. After careful evaluation and discussions with the customer, DPR helped Shriners determine that a brand new Ambulatory Surgery Center & Clinic could be built for the same amount that it would cost to make the old facility OSHPD compliant.
Once this data was presented to the customer’s team, Shriners identified a location in Pasadena to build their new state-of-the-art center for children. Shriners as an organization was changing its business model and moving away from owning and operating acute care facilities and instead teaming with local hospitals to provide additional support and service. The change to this Pasadena location worked perfectly for the organization as Shriners was able to team with Huntington Memorial Hospital, which is only a few blocks from the new facility.
This new location is half the size of the existing Los Angeles location but will be able to service three times the number of patients. The ground floor houses patient check-in, exam rooms, and x-ray rooms, including an EOS™ low-dose imaging system, and a prosthetic limb laboratory. The second floor has two operating rooms with third-floor galleries that allow doctors to view surgeries in progress. Patient recovery rooms are also located on the second floor and there is an outdoor atrium for patients to work on their rehabilitation. The third floor holds the administrative offices for all doctors and Shriners employees and meeting rooms. There is also a large outdoor patio for employees to enjoy the view of the San Gabriel Mountains.
