The University of Georgia Indoor Athletic Facility
The University of Georgia Indoor Athletic Facility | Athens, GA
The new 102,000-sq.-ft. University of Georgia Indoor Athletic Facility (IAF) connects to the Butts Mehre Heritage Hall building. The new facility is a multi-functional space for sports and events, including a 120-yard synthetic turf football field, batting cages and a 65-meter track area. Conversion of the three exterior natural grass and synthetic turf fields to natural and synthetic turf was included within this project.
Included in this project is a restructuring of the second floor area, including the renovation and creation of three new offices spaces for football staff and a new head coach’s living room. On the first floor, a new entry lobby was built on the west side of the building and on the south side as well. Adjacent to the south entrance, a brand new “Grab and Go” area was created for player nutrition.
The construction of the new IAF required demolition of the Nalley Multipurpose Room, and connection to the new Butts Mehre Building addition. The new facility is oriented north and south along the east side of Rutherford Street.
This renovation project was completed while the building was fully occupied and is an example of DPR’s commitment to working with our clients to find creative solutions for their needs. When Coach Smart wanted to have practice in the facility for the 2017 bowl game, DPR worked with the State Fire Marshal, the Office of University Architects and the local jurisdiction in order to make it happen.
