University of California, Berkeley Computational Research and Theory Facility
University of California, Berkeley Computational Research and Theory Facility | Berkeley, California
Building a four-story building on the slope of a hill with access on only one side presented many challenges for this project, requiring tight coordination and planning from the team.
The $103 million facility built on the groundwork of the University of California, Berkeley lab’s tradition of information sharing and expertise while offering an optimal environment to advance research. Key research areas that benefit from the Computational Research and Theory Facility include global climate change research, fusion energy research, biological and environmental research, basic energy science, and astrophysics.
Details
The building is approximately 140,000 sq. ft. and accommodates approximately 300 staff. There is a computer floor to accommodate two high-performance computing systems, a visualization lab for modeling and viewing simulations, an electric feeder from Grizzly Peak substation to provide seven megawatts (MW) of power capacity to serve the initial high-performance computing and office loads, and administrative support space with offices, workrooms and conference space.
The project earned LEED Gold certification and the center sets a new standard in energy efficiency for high-performance computing. The existing service road being used will be expanded to provide building entry and fire department access.
