The UNC Health Hillsborough Bed Tower II Expansion project was a two-year engagement for preconstruction and construction services to deliver a state-of-the-art acute-care and rehabilitation facility. The expansion project consists of a 94,000-sq.-ft. patient wing, a 3,700-sq.-ft. Central Utility Plant (CUP) addition, a new 157-space parking lot, and a helipad. The patient wing building is a 4-story steel and concrete structure with an LWIC roof, curtain wall, metal panel, and brick envelope system. The building contains 80 new patient rooms comprised of 30 rehabilitation beds and 50 acute-care beds, complete with care team support areas, two elevators, and two semi-custom roof-mounted AHUs. Other features include a 7-bay dialysis suite, a dining/activity room, and a physical therapy gym.

The construction and design teams focused on implementing prefabricated building elements, including patient room bathroom pods and headwall systems, increasing the facility's quality, safety, and speed-to-market. The bathroom pods were designed concurrent to preconstruction and were delivered to the site fully finished with single-point utility connections. The headwalls were also completed off-site with all electrical and medical gas outlets pre-piped and wired to overhead single-point utility connections reducing time spent on installation in the field.

All utilities for the new patient wing were fed from the existing facility, requiring extensive coordination to complete multiple tie-ins within the active hospital without unplanned interruptions to the facility's clinical operations. A CUP addition, including a new 1,000-ton chiller and cooling tower, a 9,600 MBH HHW boiler, and a 2,500-kilo watt emergency generator, increased the campus's total utility capacity.
