Project

Details

This 166,000-sq.-ft. acute/critical care facility, designed by SmithGroup, contains 58 med/surg beds, eight ICU beds and four LDRP beds. Additional services include three operating rooms, one C-Section room, full radiology suite, 12 ED bays, central sterile processing, lab, pharmacy, full service kitchen, servery, support services and central utility plant. The structural capability has been designed to allow third floor expansion for future growth.

Integrating

The Process

DPR's integrated design-build team enhanced the design process by increased stakeholder interaction and collaboration through multiple VCU CMH user group meetings and visioning sessions. This fostered partnership with the stakeholders and allowed decisions on spending to be made collaboratively over the course of design, while maintaining budget.

In fact, this collaborative approach provided a constant feedback loop informing the design, which allowed the team to deliver a high level of patient care by reducing the overall budget by 40% without eliminating one square foot of program space.
