Virginia Tech Carilion Laboratory Fit-Up
Virginia Tech Carilion Laboratory Fit-Up | Roanoke, Virginia
DPR was selected by the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute (VTCRI) for the interior fit-up of approximately 27,000 sq. ft. of space within an existing research facility, which remained open and operational during construction.
The team implemented a fast-track schedule in order to get all components completed within the constricted time frame. In order to accommodate the fast-track schedule, the DPR/Perkins+Will team broke the design up into three packages, and DPR involved the mechanical subcontractor (Atlantic Constructors) in the design process. The project required lean construction methods, coordinated delivery materials and off-site storage due to the limited lay-down and contractor space on site.
Communication
Constant communication with the VTCRI staff ensured that all phases of design and construction were aligned; collaboration was key to the success of the project. To minimize disruption to the facility's existing operations, the team worked off-hours, confined the work area, and provided detailed signage/communication for building occupants. DPR also installed a material hoist and temporary stairwell to deliver materials directly to the third floor without disrupting operations.
